This has been my first couple of weeks in the role of Neighbourhood Beat manager for St Columb, Crantock and Colan parish. I’ve been spending as much time as possible in my designated areas, both on mobile and foot patrol to familiarise myself with the locations and the community with in those areas. Everyone who I have met has been welcoming and I am pleased to say that I am looking forward to engaging more with the communities as time goes on. Myself, PCSO Clatworthy and PCSO Smith are already getting a feel for the PACT (Partners And Community Together) issues in each of the areas and you will soon be invited to voice your opinion about what issues affect you in your local neighbourhood. Our aim is Neighbourhood Improvement and a shared responsibility in this process. That shared responsibility must include community involvement, if results are to be achieved.

On the Devon and Cornwall Police Neighbourhood Team web site, I have provided a detailed list of events and information relating to our areas of responsibility and this will be frequently updated, as I obtain more information from the local Parish Council and Resident Association meetings. In this last month, in the Crantock area we have had some meaningless criminal damage and reports of vehicles speeding in the area of West Pentire Road. In the St Columb area we have parking issues and anti social drink related problems during the daytime. The PCSO’s and myself are addressing these problems and you can assist us by reporting any crime you witness as soon as possible, to increase our chance of locating the offender. You can either ring 08452 777 444 which is the non-emergency number or 999 in the case of an emergency. I look forward to embracing the role of Neighbourhood Beat Manager and working closely with the PCSO’s to achieve positive results with in the communities.

There will be customer Focus day / open surgery at Morrisons, Newquay from 0900hrs to 1300hrs on the Friday 17th April 2009 and anyone is welcome to attend.

If you have concerns about day-to-day crime and disorder issues in your local area and would like to get involved, please contact your local team.

We recognise the benefits of Neighbourhood Policing and empowering our communities to help provide a quality service. There has been a growing awareness in recent years of the value of volunteers and the vital role they can play in reducing crime, disorder and fear of crime. Neighbourhood Volunteer roles will enhance the work of the police service and provide additional support to communities throughout your local area.

We are looking for Volunteers who care about their community and would like to help make their local area a safer place to work and live.  The pressures on a modern police force are enormous and the Volunteer roles are designed to enhance the work of the police and provide additional support in the areas where the volunteer lives or works.

Volunteers can assist Devon and Cornwall Police in a variety of roles across many parts of the business, helping us to improve our capacity for work. We are looking for people who would like to get involved in a range of activities that could include:

  1.  Assisting in the administration of the PACT engagement process and working together to initiate the PACT priorities for your local area.
  2. To assist in the promotion of Neighbourhood Policing activities.
  3. To assist the Neighbourhood policing team with the setting up or running of surgeries or residents associations.
  4. Organising or supporting your local Neighbourhood watch schemes and liaising with specialist sections of the community e g pubs, shops and businesses.
  5. Working towards crime prevention and community safety initiatives.

We understand that your time is valuable and that there are many and varied reasons for volunteering, but with your support we can reduce crime, disorder and fear of crime in your local area.

Our Local PC, Darral Mares PDF Print E-mail

From the age of ten I have lived locally in the Newquay area, attending both Newquay Junior and Newquay Tretherras schools. One of my keen interests being Rugby I was lucky enough to represent Newquay Tretherras school, Newquay Hornets RFC and the County Schools Teams. I joined the Armed Forces upon leaving school and served fifteen years with the Army always managing to play rugby where-ever I was posted to, for such teams as Colchester, Winchester and many many more. One of my greatest sporting achievements was representing the Army Rugby Team playing against the Royal Air Force in 1998, whilst serving in Cyprus.

Leaving the forces in 2002, I then returned to Cornwall and now coach the Under 9's Minis rugby team at Newquay Hornets RFC, and have a position of lead coach within the Minis section of the club. I joined the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary as a Patrol Officer in the town of Wadebridge, working closely with my colleagues in Bodmin, dealing with day to day response Patrol duties.

Having been on Patrol for approximately four years, I then completed another three years in the Crime Investigation Department in Bodmin, investigating all types of crime committed within the Bodmin and Wadebridge area, ranging from Shoplifting to Grievous Bodily Harm. I am now looking forward to my move to Newquay Station and adopting the role of Neighbourhood Beat Manager of St Columb Minor, Crantock and Colan.
